What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small posts made from biocompatible materials that can fuse with a patient’s jawbone. They’re considered the best option for replacing missing teeth since they can replace the entire structure, including their roots – which is something other options like dentures or bridges cannot do. Once they’ve healed and fused with the bone, they offer impressive support for any sort of dental restoration. They also offer numerous other quality-of-life benefits.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
Dental implants are placed through a specialized surgical process that takes several months to complete. While this is longer than would be required to place traditional restorations, implants deliver a wide range of incredible benefits that make them well worth the wait. The team at White Lotus Dental is trained and equipped to carry out the entire placement process at our office, so here’s a quick look at how dental implant surgery works. If you’d like to know more or wish to schedule a consultation, please contact our staff.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Peravali will determine if you’re a suitable candidate for dental implants. She’ll check your jawbone density and the health of your gums to make sure they are stable enough to support the appliances. If you’re in sufficiently good health, you’ll probably be cleared to receive the surgery; however, it’s possible you might need a preliminary bone graft or periodontal treatment before it can be performed safely.
Dental Implant Surgery
You’ll be happy to hear that we can complete the entire dental implant surgery in our office. The process always begins with the patient receiving an appropriate anesthetic to ensure their comfort, and some people may benefit from receiving sedation treatments to help them stay still and calm. Most patients who receive dental implants report that the recovery afterward is much more comfortable than what would be expected after a tooth extraction.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment
Your implants will need a few months to heal after they’ve been placed so they can properly fuse with your jawbone through the natural process of osseointegration. Once this is complete, we can place your abutments through another minor surgical procedure. After you have healed, these pieces will be used to secure your restorations in place. We’ll also take detailed measurements of your bite during this appointment, and these will be used to manufacture a customized crown, bridge, or denture designed to complete your smile.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)
It takes about two weeks to heal after having your abutment pieces placed. Then, you’ll come back to our office in Frisco so we can secure your denture, bridge, or crown to your implant or implants, check it for fit, and make any final adjustments. Once your smile is in great shape, we’ll send you on your way with a set of detailed aftercare instructions that can help you keep your implants functional for decades.
Benefits of Dental Implants

Patients who receive dental implants don’t just replace their missing teeth; they also gain all kinds of awesome benefits, including:
- Since they stimulate the jawbone, they prevent bone resorption from occurring, keeping your jaw healthy and full.
- When kept clean and maintained, they can last for several decades or longer.
- They can restore up to 80% of your missing bite force.
- Cleaning them doesn’t require any special methods, techniques, or solutions.
